Computer Graphics and Multimedia • Prof. Dr. Leif Kobbelt
The Computer Graphics and Multimedia group at RWTH Aachen has its strongest research focus in the fields of Geometry Processing and Interactive Visualization, but it is also very active in related areas such as Computer Vision, Foto-Realistic Image Synthesis, or efficient Multimedia Data Transmission. We are cooperating with various companies in the automotive and automation industry as well as with research groups around the world (e.g. ETH, Caltech, Tsinghua). We consider our research activities as applied basic research since most of the techniques and
algorithms developed by our group address fundamental and abstract problems and they are usually inspired from and directly applicable in practically relevant application scenarios in areas such as industrial design and manufacturing, rapid prototyping, medical image analysis, or virtual reality.
In the context of computational sciences and numerical simulation our expertise lies in the efficient processing of geometric models (e.g. polygonal meshes) during the pre- and post-processing stages.
• 3D shape reconstruction (from laser scan data, images, or video)
• model repair and optimization
• mesh generation and decimation
• multiresolution and freeform modeling
• shape optimization with constraints
• interactive and parameter-controlled shape modeling
• subdivision surfaces
• interactive visualization of complex models
• advanced image processing
